Phillip W. "Opa" Hanson

Phillip W. Phillip Wallace "Opa" Hanson, 73, passed away Sunday morning, March 18, 2018 in Manhattan, Kansas. He was born May 16, 1944 in Sioux City, Iowa, the son of Orvan J. and Corrinne M. (Cusick) Hanson. Phil was raised on a farm in Soldier, Iowa, and graduated from Soldier Consolidated High School in 1962.
Phillip joined the Army in 1962 and was stationed in Germany, where he met his future bride, Erika G. Engel. After a tour of duty as a medic in Vietnam from 1966 to 1967, Phillip, Erika and their young children, son Rainer and daughter Corinne, moved to Fort Lewis, Washington and then on to Sandia Base, New Mexico where his daughter Phyllis was born.
In 1971, Phillip left the Army to take over the Hanson family farm in Soldier. For more than 10 hard-working years they lived on that beautiful farmadding one more daughter, Jessica, to the family during that time. In 1982, Phillip, Erika and the kids moved to Denison, Iowa, where Philip gave dedicated care as an EMT for the hospital.
Phillip rejoined the Army in 1986, and retired in 1997 at Fort Reilly, Kansas, Phil and Erika have resided in Abilene for the past 25 years.
He cherished his wife Erika dearly and enjoyed time with his grandchildren and going fishing. After retirement, Phillip drove truck for Great Plaines and volunteered his services at the Heritage Center in Abilene.
He is survived by his wife, Erika of Abilene; daughters, Corinne (Tom) Srsen of Olympia, Wash., Phyllis (Michael) Tolzmann of Owings, Md, Jessica (Brian) Barton of Nine Mile Falls, Wash.; and son, Rainer P. Hanson of Lake Zurich, Ill., grandchildren Bailey Barton, Gabe Duff, Lauren Srsen; Alex and Ryan Hanson; and Theo Tolzman; Sister, Cheryl Hallquist of St. Joseph, MO and brother, Jerry Hanson of Mesa, AZ.
Phillip was preceded in death by his parents and three grandchildren.
The family suggests memorial contributions in his name be made to the Phillip Hanson Memorial Fund and can be sent in care of the Danner Funeral Home POB 758 Abilene, Kansas 67410.
