James Russel Shelton
James R. Shelton, 47, passed away Tuesday, November 29th, in Abilene. He was born February 4, 1969 in Tucson, Arizona, the son of Thomas James and Sharon Lea (Morgan) Shelton. Growing up in Tucson, James attended local schools, graduated from Catalina High School and attended the University of Arizona. After attending the University of Arizona Jim worked for N.O.A.O. (National Optical Astronomy Observatory) in conjunction with the National Science Foundation. During his employment with N.O.A.O. he traveled to and spent extensive time at the Observatories in Hawaii (on the big island of Hawaii) and at LaSerena, Chile. Upon leaving this field of work he took a hiatus for approximately a year. During that time he became involved in the greyhound racing industry in Tucson, eventually becoming a trainer and opening his own racing kennel there. Wanting to explore the other phases of the Greyhound racing industry, in 2008 he visited the David Blair Kennels in Abilene to learn about the work involved with breeding, whelping, raising and training young greyhounds. He had found his “nitch in life” and never left. He enjoyed relaxing in nature and cheering on "his" Redskins.
James was preceded in death by his father.
He is survived by his mother, Sharon Lea Shelton of Tucson and a brother, David Lloyd Shelton of Midland, Texas.
