John R. Zutavern
John R. Zutavern 87, passed away Tuesday, September 20th, in Salina. He was born December 30, 1928 in Great Bend, the son of Louis and Myrtle (Johnson) Zutavern. Growing up in Great Bend, John attended local schools, graduated from Great Bend High School and attended the University of New Mexico for two years. On February 3, 1952, he married Martha H. Ange. Most all of their married life was spent in Abilene. John was an Air Force Veteran serving from 1951 until1955. He had been employed by Alco until retiring as Divisional Merchandise Manager in 1991. He had served three terms as Abilene Mayor, promoted Sister Cities, was a trustee of the Eisenhower Foundation, had served on the design team that built Frontier Estates, had served on the Abilene School Board and was a mentor with Students Attending A Local Charter High School. John was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Erna Kampert and a brother, Jerry Zutavern, He enjoyed inspiring young people to be successful in life. John was a member of the Abilene First United Methodist Church and the Kiwanis and Elks clubs.
He is survived by his wife, Martha Zutavern of Abilene and a daughter Ann Zutavern of Albuquerque, New Mexico.
The family has chosen cremation. Memorial services will be held 2:00 PM Friday at the Abilene First United Methodist Church with Rev. John Collins officiating. Inurnment will be held at a later date. The family suggests memorial contributions in his name be made to the Abilene First United Methodist Church or the Eisenhower Foundation. They may be left at the church the day of the service or left at or sent in care of the Danner Funeral Home POB 758 Abilene, Kansas 67410.
