93, passed away Thursday, June 30th, in Abilene. She was born January 9, 1923 in Waukena, California the daughter of Raymond E. and Velma E. (Heise) Wagaman. Growing up in Hiawatha, Kansas, Irene attended local schools and graduated from Upland Academy in Upland California then attended Upland College. She completed her nursing training at Miami Valley School of Nursing in Miami Ohio, earning her RN degree in 1945. On December 20, 1946, Irene was married to Mahlon Engle. Most of their married life was spent farming north of Abilene. They retired in 1984 and moved to Abilene in 1986. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends, quilting, cooking, gardening and her church. Irene was a long time very active member of the Zion Brethren In Christ Church and served on a multitude of community services. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Irene is survived by: her husband, Mahlon of Abilene; 3 daughters, Beth (Jim) Shelly of Grantham, Pennsylvania, Lucille (John) Landis of Albuquerque, New Mexico and Rebecca (Howard) Garver of Lancaster, Pennsylvania; 2 sons, Dale (Margaret) Engle of Abilene and Howard (Melissa) Engle of Abilene; 18 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 AM Monday, July 4th, at the Zion Brethren In Christ Church with Pastor Jay Johnson officiating, with no graveside service. The family will receive friends 2:00 – 3:00 PM Sunday, July 3rd, at the Danner Funeral Home. The family suggests memorial contributions in her name be given to The Navigators to aid a grandchild in mission work.
