William C. McCallum
William C. “Bill” McCallum,
97, passed away Monday, June 20th, in Salina. He was born July 8, 1918 in Wichita, the son of James and Mable (Henderson) McCallum. Growing up in Solomon, Bill attended local schools, graduated from Solomon High School and attended Kansas Wesleyan University. He was a World War II Army Infantry Veteran having served in the European Theater. In June of 1948 Bill married Ernestine Donmyer. The early years of their marriage were spent in Salina until moving to Solomon in 1964. After the war, he had been employed by Civil Service in the medical facility at Smoky Hill/Schilling Air Base until retiring in 1971. She preceded him in death in 2010. Bill enjoyed spending time with family and friends, woodworking, training hunting dogs, hunting and managing his farm business until his death. He was preceded in death by an infant son, John McCallum.
Bill is survived by: a daughter, Betsy McCallum of Solomon; 2 sons, James McCallum of Houston, Texas and Mick and wife Lisa McCallum of Topeka; and 3 grandchildren, Karen McCallum of Austin, Texas, Will McCallum of Houston, Texas and Desmond Schlattman of Topeka.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM Saturday, June 25th, at the Solomon Methodist Church with Pastor Roland Slater officiating. Interment will follow in the Prairie Mound Cemetery east of Solomon. The family will receive friends 5:30 – 7:00 PM Friday, June 24th, at the Danner Funeral Home. The family suggests memorial contributions in his name be made to the Solomon Methodist Church or the Solomon Library.
