94, passed away Wednesday, March 4th, in Abilene. He was born April 18, 1920 in Ottawa County, the son of Benjamin H. and Rachel C. (Mahar) McConkey. Growing up in Ottawa County, Howard attended local schools. He was a World War II and Korean Army veteran having been awarded the Bronze Star. On February 11, Howard married Grace Marie Vossloh. Most all of their married life was spent in Abilene. She preceded him in death in 1987. He was employed by KP&L as a mechanical engineer until retiring. Howard enjoyed coon hunting with his dogs, introducing many young people to the sport. His dog, Drum, was a state champion. He was also preceded in death by his parents, a sister Lorene Wiggins, and three brothers, Eldon, Sherrill and Lloyd McConkey.
