Virgil G. Sprenkle

85, passed away Thursday, January 15th, in Abilene. He was born October 16, 1929, the sixth of nine children, in Neosho, Missouri, to James Denton and Felicia (Edmisten) Sprenkle. Growing up on the family farm outside of Neosho, Virgil attended local schools and graduated from Neosho High School with the class of 1947. He was a Seabee in the U.S. Navy from July 1947 to October 1951, serving in various locations in the South Pacific. He then returned to Neosho and was a guard at Camp Crowder. On July 16, 1954, he married Carla E. Severs in Neosho, the daughter of Charles E. “Pete” and Nina D. (Housden) Severs. They resided in Nosho until Virgil accepted a Civil Service job at Fort Riley, Kansas. Virgil and Carla moved their family to Abilene in January of 1948. With 30 years of Federal Civil Service, Virgil retired in 1985 as lead foreman with the Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Section at Fort Riley. He was always looking for a better way to get the job done and received several awards for time and cost saving suggestions during his career. For many years Virgil also provided refrigeration/air condition repairs for businesses in Abilene and the surrounding communities. He enjoyed traveling to visit friends and family, including the many trips to visit his siblings, farming, gardening, hunting and fishing. Virgil was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers; James W., George E., John D. and Elmer L. Sprenkle and a sister Margaret B. York-Cowen. Virgil was a fifty year member of the Eagles Aerie #2934 and a lifetime member of the Abilene V.F.W.

Funeral services will be held 12:00 PM Wednesday, January 21st, at the Danner Funeral Home with Pastor Kerry Coup officiating followed by cremation. A private family inurnment will take place at a later date. The family will receive friends 5:30 until 6:30 PM Tuesday, January 20th, at the Danner Funeral Home. The family suggests memorial contributions in his name be given to the Hospice of Dickinson County. They may be left at or sent in care of the Danner Funeral Home POB 758 Abilene, Kansas 67410.
