Paul B. “Bernie” Steinhauser

90, passed away Monday, September 1st, in Abilene. He was born May 22, 1924 in Hiawatha, the son of Dr. William and Elizabeth (Amann) Steinhauser. Growing up in Hiawatha, Bernie attended local schools, graduated from Hiawatha High School and graduated from Creighton University School of Pharmacy. He served in the U.S. Army in the European theater. On June 4, 1955, he married Marcella Fischer in the Blessed Sacrament Church in Wichita. The early years of their married life was spent in Hiawatha before moving to Abilene and purchasing the Henry and Neil Drug Store in 1962. Bernie actively practiced pharmacy until June of 2014. He was preceded in death by two sisters and a brother. Bernie was a member of the St. Andrews Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He had been a member of the Woodcarvers Association, a charter member of the Abilene Optimist’s Club, had been a Past Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus and a Boy Scout leader. He will be missed by his loving wife and devoted children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:00AM Thursday, September 4th, at the St. Andrews Catholic Church with Fr. Henry Baxa as Celebrant. Interment will follow in the Mt. St. Joseph Cemetery. A parish rosary will be recited 5:00PM Wednesday, September 3rd, at the St. Andrews Catholic Church with a reception and the family receiving friends afterwards in the parish hall. In lieu of flowers the family asks memorial contributions in Bernie’s name be made to the St. Andrews Catholic School. They may be left at the church the day of the rosary or service or sent in care of the Danner Funeral POB 758 Abilene, Kansas.
