Gwendolyn Frances Romine Jordan
96, lifelong resident of Abilene, passed away Thursday, October 24th, in Abilene. She was born April 25, 1917 in Abilene, the daughter of Claude E. and Lillie J. (Shellhaas) Romine. Growing up in Abilene, she attended local schools and graduated from Abilene High School. She married her college sweetheart, Frank W. Jordan at the Clovia House in Manhattan on January 3, 1940. She spent her last semester of school at Mississippi State where Frank was teaching, but had her credits transferred back to Kansas State University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Journalism. She worked as a Social Worker for Dickinson County for six years. She wrote the grant which helped establish Abilene’s juvenile probation department. She served as chief probation officer for 4 years before her retirement in 1975. Gwen and her husband Frank were honored with the “Abilene Citizen of the Year” award in 1985 for their years of service and devotion to the community. Gwen and Frank believed education was a key to success in life. They have provided various educational opportunities with scholarships to students, including the ability to attend Kansas State University. Together, they were also founding members of the Dickinson County Community Foundation as well as supporters for the establishment of the Abilene Community Center. They were devoted to each other, raising their family and committed to helping make Abilene a great place to live. Gwen was a very involved member of the Abilene First United Methodist Church and its kitchen. She was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years and a brother, D.V. Romine.

Gwen chose cremation. A Celebration of Life Service will be held 11:00 A.M. Thursday, October 31st, at the Abilene First United Methodist Church, Revs. John and Jenny Collins officiating with a private inurnment. The family will receive friends 5:00 – 6:30 P.M. Wednesday, October 30th, at the Danner Funeral Home. The family suggests memorial contributions in her name be made to the Dickinson County Community Foundation or the Abilene First United Methodist Church. They may be left at the church the day of the service or left at or sent in care of the Danner Funeral Home POB 758 Abilene, KS. 67410
